James Bond’s Real Aston Martin DB5 To Cross The Auction Block

What we have here is one of the four Goldfinger-spec Aston Martin DB5 Bond Cars, complete with all of its glorious gadgets, heading to an auction that’s destined to attract plenty of attention.

RM Auctions will offer chassis number DB5/2008/R at its Monterey event on August 15, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for someone to acquire the original Bond Car, also known as “The Most Famous Car in the World”.

Unlike Goldfinger, where Aston Martin loaned two DB5s to the production company, this specific Bond Car was designed and built with all the gadgets from the factory, as the hero car for the famous British spy.

That means that all the gadgets, such as the front and rear hydraulic rams, retractable bulletproof screen, in-dash radar, ejector seat, revolving number plates, oil slick sprayer, hidden machine guns and smoke screen, were designed and built to function repeatedly on command, and not for one take as the hero car in Goldfinger.

That being said, the car underwent a no-expense-spared restoration by Roos Engineering in Switzerland, one of 13 facilities worldwide appointed by Aston Martin as Heritage Specialists. The four-year restoration included not only refinishing the body and chassis to factory-new standards, but also refurbishing all 13 modifications that helped Bond defeat the bad guys.

In addition to its as-new condition, this DB5 also benefits from an extremely limited chain of ownership, with just three privateers having possession of the car over last five decades, including a 35-year stint in a museum exhibition.

“The DB5 is a special Aston, but this one has an aura all of its own. Just to be in its presence is exciting. The standard of Roos’ restoration is extremely impressive, and the Swiss Furka Pass awaits”, said historian Stephen Archer.
