It’s the comparison test that doesn’t end: The Chevrolet Camaro vs. Ford Mustang. The two pony cars have been going head to head since the 1960s, and to continue the showdown, we’ve pitted their convertible variants against each other. This time, both drop-tops are packing over 400 hp and manual transmissions for maximum driver engagement. No rental car specials here, just tire-shredding V-8 convertible muscle cars.

We put the Ford Mustang GT and Chevrolet Camaro SS convertibles through MotorTrend’s battery of testing and found two cars that behave so differently from each other. At the limit, the Mustang understeers and snaps into oversteer right when it finally starts to turn, revealing that it’s not comfortable when pushed hard. In a straight line, however, the Mustang’s drag mode makes it easy to consistently get the same 0–60 mph times. We recorded 4.4 seconds before hitting the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds at 113.6 mph.

Both cars put down commendable handling performance on the track with 0.98 g of lateral acceleration but the Camaro’s 24.3-second figure eight time at an average of 0.82 g makes it the V-8 convertible that dances like a sports car. It stops shorter than the Mustang, too, at 103 feet, further cementing its performance credentials.

Although the Chevrolet Camaro is the better sports car, the Ford Mustang is the easier convertible muscle car to live with. It has a larger trunk even with the top down, a better ride, more interior space, and kid-friendly rear seats. For a big V-8 convertible, those are more important than how fast it can take a corner or how it performs on a race track.
