In the push to create the 2020 Shelby GT500, Ford Performance engineers learned how to push the platform to new performance heights. Along the way it was easy to roll some of those pieces back into its Shelby GT350 cousins to make the whole lineage faster. Those upgrades included refinements to the engine block and cylinder heads that benefitted all of the GT350s.
Now will all the hype on about the pending GT500, you might not realize that Ford Performance is still offering the R-model version of the GT350, and in the 2020 model year this car will get even faster in the corners by adding the GT500’s high-trail steering knuckle complemented by a new steering rack and recalibrated steering software to make the most of the new, better hardware.
“It’s always been our plan to take the latest innovations from the GT500 program and strategically apply them across the Mustang lineup,” Ed Krenz, Ford Performance Chief Program Engineer, explained. “These latest updates to the GT350R keep its performance competitive and on the top if its game, whether that’s on the track or on the street.”
The GT350R is the best-handling Mustang to date, and these upgrades look to keep it at the head of the naturally aspirated class.
