Ford Flexes Its Mustang Muscle & More At The 25th Anniversary Woodward Dream Cruise

If you love cars, you know about the Woodward Dream Cruise. For the past 25 years cars come out from all across the land to cruise down Detroit’s Main Street, which runs 27 miles from Detroit north to Pontiac, Michigan. The organized gathering celebrates the ‘Woodwarding’ that began in the ’50s when car enthusiasts converged on drive-ins along the historic avenue.

On 9 Mile in Ferndale, Ford takes over a whole street and several parking lots with displays and nearly 1,000 Mustangs. The spectacle is called Mustang Alley and it is delight for pony car enthusiasts. Of course, how else would you greet those entering the alley but with a 2020 Shelby GT500?

If you have never been to the Dream Cruise, it is definitely bucket-list material. You will see every car imaginable. Mustangs and Ford muscle were plentiful, and it was great seeing everything from the latest Mustangs to the classics mixing it up with all the other cars.

For much of the day throngs of onlookers scoped out the Mustangs along with displays from Ford and other related companies like Roush Performance and Shelby American.

This year Ford sponsored the silver-anniversary event and set up shop at several spots along the cruise to show off its wares. From a display of Ford Performance machines near 11 Mile Road to the annual Mustang Alley show at 9 Mile Road during the day of the cruise, there was plenty of Blue Oval machinery to enjoy on a sunny day in the Motor City.

A highlight of the Ford Performance display on Mustang Alley was a 2020 Shelby GT500 turned on its side. It was the first chance for many to see the underpinning’s of the Blue Oval’s forthcoming halo Mustang.

We captured as many of the highlights from the Dream Cruise, which really gears up during the whole week leading up to the official event on Saturday, so check out the gallery below and start making your plans to see it in person next year.

Ford’s media display along Woodward showed off a whole host of the latest Ford Performance vehicles, but right along the avenue the company showed off three special SVT Mustangs. This is the first 2000 Mustang Cobra R of 300 built. It was joined by the first 1995 Cobra R and first 1993 Cobra R.

A highlight for us at Ford’s media display was the teardown of the Shelby GT500’s supercharged 5.2-liter engine by two technicians from Ford’s prototype group. Adam Zdanowski (left) and Mike Walker made quick work of turning a new Predator engine into a short-block.
