The VW ID.3 Will Communicate With Occupants Via A Clever LED Strip

VW is gearing up for the launch of the ID.3’s series production and as the first model of the all-electric ID range, it has more tricks up its sleeve than just a zero-emissions powertrain.

One of those tricks is the so-called ID. Light concept, a interior lighting system that’s created to communicate visually with the occupants.

The ID. Light concept utilizes an LED strip that runs across the cockpit, assisting the driver by changing color depending on its current function.

The ID. Light compliments the ID.3’s advanced voice control, sending a light signal when the system responds to the voices of the occupants, and also accentuating information from the active safety and navigation systems in order to help the driver feel more comfortable and confident behind the wheel.

Light signals are also emitted to notify the driver that the drive system is active, or that the vehicle is unlocked or locked. It can also recommend changing lanes by blinking and warn the driver if the vehicle is in the wrong lane.

The interior LED strip is also used to indicate a fully charged battery by glowing green while warnings such as a braking manoeuvre is indicated by red.

“For all its innovativeness, ID. Light functions intuitively by using familiar colours,” says Valentina Wilhelm, User Experience Designer at Volkswagen. “This use of light, makes the vehicle more ‘personable’ and is a very simple and intuitive way of communicating.”
