Hummer Could Make A Return In 2021 As An Electric Vehicle Brand

General Motors killed off Hummer nearly a decade ago, but it appears a revival could be in the works.

According to several sources who talked to Reuters, GM could use the Hummer name on a new range of electric pickups and SUVs.

The models will reportedly be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant which was saved as part of the company’s tentative agreement with the UAW. Production is slated to begin in late 2021 and the company will reportedly make a $3 (£2.3 / €2.7) billion investment into the plant.

Little is known about the new-generation of Hummer models, but they would reportedly be positioned as premium vehicles. Reuters also says they are part of the “BT1 electric truck/SUV program.”

The program isn’t specifically focused on Hummer either as the publication says the company also plans to launch an electric Cadillac crossover and an electric GMC pickup in 2023.

However, the first electric pickup would arrive in 2021 and a source said the Hummer name is “under consideration.” A decision hasn’t been finalized yet, but the pickup is reportedly codenamed Project O.

Following the launch of the pickup, a performance variant would arrive in 2022. There’s no word on specifics, but it could be an off-road inspired variant similar to the Ford F-150 Raptor. That’s just speculation at this point, but an electric SUV is slated to be launched, one year later, in 2023.

BT1 vehicles will reportedly ride on a skateboard platform and one analyst suggested the upcoming pickup could cost $90,000 (£69,507 / €80,601) or more. The high price tag could be one of the motivations for considering a Hummer revival as the company is still known as a purveyor of expensive pickups and SUVs. Hummer could also be a better fit than Cadillac as the luxury brand dropped the slow-selling Escalade EXT in 2013.
