We are big fans of all things hot rod, hence the name and 70 years of history. We dig rides of all sizes and shapes, from bank account-busting customs to decades-long father/son builds pieced together in a dimly lit garage. Just about anything and everything fits the mold, even plastic injection-molded hot rods.
Dennis Oud is an ingenuous hot rod builder from the Netherlands, but not in the usual way. He builds hot rods perfectly suited for a 1½ inch LEGO Minifigures.
As with millions before, from an early age Dennis was immediately infected with the joy of creation from his first introduction to LEGO. Now 9 years into car-building, he draws inspiration from just about everywhere—more specifically, hot rods and vintage vehicles in photos and in person. “The challenge is to grasp the identity and shape of the car with the limited forms of the LEGO building bricks, as well as possible,” Dennis told HOT ROD. He takes every car as a new challenge to encapsulate all the details and nuance of the vehicle in such a tiny package.
Dennis sees his efforts as a way to bridge the gap between hot rod lovers and LEGO fans. “The positive reactions I receive are really great,” he said, “and give me the energy and inspiration to continue building!”
One of the coolest things? All of his builds are available as downloadable plans from ReBrickable.com—check out his HUGE portfolio of builds. He even offers parts, and step-by-step build instructions for each vehicle. Go scratch that car-building itch without breaking the bank.
