1967 Chevy C10 Eaton Detroit Truetrac Differential Install

Here is our 1967 Chevy C10 affectionately dubbed “Truck Norris” by former HOT ROD Editor David Kennedy. We’ve replaced the open-differential carrier in the truck 12-bolt with an Eaton Detroit Truetrac limited-slip differential, then followed that job up by blowing the vehicle apart to take on the job of completely rebuilding the suspension with a coilover conversion from Total Cost Involved (TCI). After a long hiatus, our C10 is a roller once again, and ready to be reassembled, so we will commence with the highlights, starting with this Eaton Detroit Truetrac install. Follow along with the pictures and captions.

Open differentials are the bane of the automotive enthusiast, and we lived with ours for far too long. Our Band-Aid fix was an inexpensive locker that replaced the spider gears, but it made for jerky cornering. J&S Gear in Huntington Beach, California, installed an Eaton Detroit Truetrac differential that fixed all our ails. The first step was to remove the stock differential.

The stock 3.73:1 gears were in good shape and work well with the ratios in our T-56 Magnum transmission from American Powertrain, so we transferred the ring gear to the new Truetrac carrier.

The axlehousing received new axle bearings and pinion bearing races. The pinion bearing was lubricated with white lithium grease, while the axle bearings got a generous coating of grease.

With the pinion gear and new differential assembly reinstalled, we checked the backlash and preload on the teeth, verifying the correct wear pattern.

All the measurements checked out, so we completed the job by installing the cover with a fresh cork gasket sandwiched between a layer of silicone.

Our next update will highlight the installation of TCI’s coilover conversion. You’ll appreciate how we lofted the bed and drilled and hammered rivets until our ears bled. It’s good stuff!
