5 tips for your interview

Have you received the invitation for an interview? Congratulations, you've done the most difficult part of the application! Now it is important to convince in a personal conversation. Don't worry, nothing can go wrong with our tips.

What do I have to consider for the interview?

Actually, being accepted for a job interview is a reason to be happy. But many graduates are also afraid of the moment when they have to present themselves to a company. No wonder, since you keep hearing horror stories about blackouts and supposedly stupid answers during the interview, which meant that the applicants did not get the job.

But also make yourself aware: As a rule, HR managers are not monsters. They know that you are nervous and that you are not used to the situation. Otherwise, it can also help to openly address your nervousness. In this way you take the pressure off yourself of having to cover up your nervousness and appear as strong and hardened as possible. Plus, maybe you can sell it in a way that makes you nervous only because it really is your dream job and you really want to have that job.

Good preparation is essential

The easiest way to counteract the nervousness of the interview is good preparation. If your nerves start to flutter in the interview, it is good if you can focus on something that you have prepared. You should therefore pay attention to the following things:

... Your application: What stages in your résumé did you just touch on? Where will be asked again? Are there any weaknesses in your application? In order to prepare yourself for these questions, you should read your application carefully again before the interview. Better still, show it to a friend and ask him what catches the eye about the application and what might be asked about.

the employer: In which industry is the company active and how does it do business? How many people work there? What is the company philosophy? Normally, your interview won't turn into a knowledge test, but if you can incorporate the information about your employer into the conversation, you signal that you have studied your potential job extensively and that you are genuinely interested.

the job: The best thing to do is to go through the job advertisement again point by point and think about why you can do it well for each of the work areas described. This is how you make sure that you know exactly what the requirements are for you.

Tell me something about yourself!

This is often one of the most dreaded parts of the interview. After the greeting, he is usually relatively at the beginning of the conversation and is a big problem for many inexperienced applicants. Here, as usual in the job interview, the following applies: Keep your blood calm. You should prepare yourself for this prompt with a response of two to three minutes. The best thing to do is to give a best-of of your résumé here. Just mention the experiences and qualifications that make you particularly suitable for this job and use them to create a common thread.

Thinking about good answers is one thing, but saying them out loud is another. It is best to sit down at home and listen to your prepared answers. Better still, have an interview before your interview. To do this, grab a friend and have them ask you a few of the standard interview questions.

Here are ten questions you can ask yourself in a job interview:

  • What role do you take on in the team?

    Do not commit yourself, but emphasize that you can adapt well to different situations. Give specific examples if possible.

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?

    When it comes to your strengths, a mix of healthy self-esteem and humility is important. Don't put your light under a bushel, or make the impression that there's nothing left to teach you. Prove the strengths you mention with concrete examples.

    When it comes to your weaknesses, you shouldn't go into too much detail and, most importantly, not mention anything that could really negatively affect your potential work. At the same time, avoid clichéd answers like "I'm too perfectionist." It is best to always mention an example of a weakness that shows that you are working on the weakness.

  • What has been your greatest success so far and what has been your greatest failure?

    Here, too, it is important to find the golden mean. Name your successes, for example a good graduation from your degree, but don't write too much. If you fail, you shouldn't shift the blame on yourself while focusing on what you learned from them and how you would avoid them in the future.

  • Why should we hire you?

    The best thing to do here is to go through the job advertisement again and explain why you meet the requirements. Name qualifications and experience.

  • Why do you want to work for us?

    The main thing here is to show that you have dealt with the company. See how the company is presenting itself to the public and connect to your own application.

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

    Again, it's about establishing a connection between your personal plans and those of the employer. It should work in such a way that you think about the future, but at the same time see nothing but set in stone and are open to new things. You don't have to name a specific professional position that you want to hold in five years.

  • How would your friends describe you?

    The best thing to do is to just ask your friends and mention the positive answers that relate to the job you are applying for. Again, anecdotes that show, for example, that your friends trust you or appreciate your honesty are a good idea.

  • What bothers you about others and how do you deal with them?

    Do not become too blasphemous or mean here. You also shouldn't relate too much to yourself. It is best to stick to character traits that are generally viewed as problematic, for example a lack of teamwork skills or commitment, and formulate them diplomatically.

  • What salary do you imagine?

    Research in advance what other young professionals in your industry will earn from comparable employers. Name a salary range and have a reason for it.

  • What are you doing in your spare time?

    Stick to the truth and state the hobbies that are harmless. In no case should you say something like “Nothing. I'm a workaholic. ”Because that seems unbelievable.

You show interest with your own questions

In nine out of ten cases, your interview ends with the question: "Do you have any more questions?" You should definitely not say no here, because you come across as disinterested or shy. Think about a few questions in advance. Even if they have already been answered during the conversation, simply ask again for clarification such as "Did I understand correctly that ...?" Or ask a question that follows on from something that was said in the conversation. What you should avoid, however, are questions that can be answered with a click on your employer's website. It seems like you haven't dealt with the employer in enough detail.

Clothes make the man

It is extremely important that you present yourself well in the interview. Because even if it seems unfair, we often automatically think that careless appearance also means a careless way of working. Nowadays there are no longer such strict dress codes in many companies, but if in doubt you should anyway rather too professional than too casual be dressed. When it comes to jewelry and make-up, however, less is more. Additionally, keep in mind that you only have one chance to make a good first impression. In addition to a well-groomed appearance, the following applies: Pay attention to an upright posture, clear speech, look your counterpart in the eyes and do not forget the smile.

Prepare yourself well, but don't drive yourself crazy

Don't take the interview lightly, but don't drive yourself crazy either. With thorough research and a few dry runs, you can master any job interview. If you also pay attention to appropriate clothing and good body language, the prerequisites for getting the job are ideal. Always make it clear to yourself that you have already convinced your interlocutor of you to a certain extent, otherwise you would not have been invited.
