Why is Istanbul International Airport so bad

Istanbul New Airport

Istanbul New Airport is located northwest of the city in the Arnavutköy district on the European side.

The official opening of the new airport in Istanbul took place on October 29, 2018, but on April 7, 2019 the time has come: the big move from Ataturk International Airport has been completed.

Passenger traffic at the old airport has been discontinued, only freight, maintenance, private, air taxis, business and diplomatic flights are carried out there. The move to the new airport also entailed the exchange of the two Iata codes. For example, the new Istanbul Airport received the IST code from the former Ataturk International passenger airport, but both have retained the Icao codes: LTBA for the old and LTFM for the new hub.

Istanbul Airport is currently geared towards 90 million passengers per year. Ataturk International Airport was no longer able to cope with the emerging volume and recently counted around 68 million travelers. According to plans, all expansion measures for the new airport should be completed in 2028 and handle 200 million passengers per year. In addition to Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Atlasglobal, Eurowings and Onur Air, more than 100 different airlines will be able to fly to Istanbul New Airport from over 300 destinations.
