Permutation: what is it?

Every possible arrangement of n elements in which all elements are used is called the permutation P of these elements. For a better overview, there is now a list of requirements that must be met:

  • All elements of the initial set differ from one another.
  • All elements must be selected.
  • An element cannot be selected more than once.

The formula for calculating this is: P = n! (spoken: P is equal to n-factorial)

Example 1:

There are 4 people and 4 chairs. How many options are there to put these people on the chairs?

Solution: P = 4! = 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 24

Example 2:

The letters A, B and C should be shown in all arrangements. How many options are there and what are they?
