Intestinal mushrooms - what to do?

Fungal diseases - called mycoses by doctors - have increased in recent years. This is not only observed by dermatologists, but also internists and gynecologists. Those affected complain of a wide variety of clinical pictures, such as a fungal attack on the vagina, feet or intestines.

At Intestinal fungus it is mostly yeast of the genus Candida albicans. The yeasts break down carbohydrates from food into carbon dioxide and fusel alcohol. The gas leads to bloating, bloating and pain in the intestinal area. If exposure to fusel alcohol continues for longer, it can damage the liver. The Candida yeasts produce a special toxin that has only recently been identified that can cause symptoms such as migraines or joint problems.

Colon fungi: who is at risk?

Doctors blame dietary errors such as too much sugar and white flour products as the cause of the increase in fungal diseases. The frequent use of cortisone and antibiotics as well as the increase in environmental pollutants are also to blame. All of these factors weaken the immune system and thus encourage the fungi to spread. If, for example, antibiotics have damaged the natural intestinal flora, Candida yeasts can spread because important physiological germs are missing as opponents.

People with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of contracting candida. These include, above all, those who are ill who take cortisone and antibiotics, people who have had an organ transferred, cancer and AIDS patients, and diabetics. Older people whose immune system is weakening are also considered a risk group. Women who take the pill are also more susceptible because the hormones loosen up their mucous membranes and make them more sugary.

Yeasts occur practically everywhere in nature. They colonize the mucous membranes of humans and animals, adhere to objects and are in the earth and in water. In contrast to other yeasts, Candida albicans is dependent on the mucous membranes of warm-blooded animals and those of humans. The fungus is transmitted from person to person through direct physical contact. A simple handshake is not enough, but kissing or intercourse is enough. The yeast usually cannot harm healthy people. As a rule, weakened or sick people become infected.

The yeasts particularly like to settle in warm and humid places. They find optimal living conditions in the niches of the intestine. It is warm there and the food supply is plentiful.

Intestinal fungus: symptoms range from diarrhea to migraines

Identifying a yeast infection in the intestine is not easy. The symptoms are unspecific and can have other causes. The main symptoms are flatulence, bloated stomach especially after sweet food, diarrhea and constipation, which often alternate with each other. Food cravings, recurring vaginal thrush, itching at the anus and alcohol intolerance as well as constant iron and zinc deficiency can all indicate an infection. Those affected also repeatedly report migraines, depression, liver diseases, skin changes and joint pain.

The symptoms may or may not be caused by candida. Even a stool examination in a special laboratory does not always provide reliable information because it is always a random sample and the fungi particularly like to dwell in nests in the intestine.

Intestinal fungi: It is best to treat it holistically

The fungus is often fought first with an anti-fungal agent such as nystatin. Then it is important to strengthen the weakened immune system - for example with microbiological therapy. The patients receive specific, health-promoting intestinal germs and an endogenous vaccine, so-called auto vaccine, for three to six months. They activate the body's own defenses and regulate the intestinal flora that is so important for this.

As a hygienic measure, it is recommended to change the toothbrush every four weeks, since an intestinal colonization with Candida often occurs together with an infection in the mouth. Braces and dentures should always be cleaned thoroughly because, like toothbrushes, they can represent a fungal reservoir.

Anti-fungal diet

A consistent anti-fungal diet of at least four to six weeks is also essential. The aim is to deprive the yeast of their nutritional basis. Sugar, sweets, white flour products and alcohol are strictly to be avoided. Sweet fruit should also be avoided in the first four weeks.

The focus is on a wholesome diet with lots of lettuce, vegetables and whole grain products. The high-fiber diet not only strengthens the immune system, but probably also has a mechanical cleaning effect by sweeping out the fungal nests in the intestinal villi through its fibrous structure and at the same time stimulating the bowel movement. The high content of phytochemicals with an antimicrobial effect makes the whole food diet the ideal anti-fungal diet - however, success is only lasting if a consistent change in diet follows.

Prevention with whole foods

The whole food diet is the best prevention against a yeast infection. The yeasts will not find the right breeding ground in the organism of a person who is well nourished. If an infection is already present, targeted therapy and a long-term change in eating habits to a healthy diet that is as natural as possible can provide an effective remedy.
