What is a PPPoE username and password

Enter your user name for PPPoE - this is how you get DSL

PPPoE is an authentication method for an Internet connection via DSL. For this purpose, a user name and a password must be stored in a suitable DSL modem in order to establish the Internet connection.

What you need:

  • Access data of your provider
  • DSL modem or router with integrated modem

PPPoE with a DSL connection

Almost all DSL connections are established using the PPPoE protocol. PPPoE stands for "Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet". PPPoE combines 2 essential conditions to enable broadband internet access.

  • First of all, the PPP protocol enables a user to be authenticated using a user name and password for a specific service on a remote server and the corresponding network data and configurations to be obtained.
  • At the same time, this protocol is used in PPPoE via the fast Ethernet interface, which has a sufficiently large bandwidth to be able to deliver broadband internet.
  • Theoretically, the dial-up connection made possible by PPP is not necessary; after all, the broadband internet lines are leased lines and therefore always available. However, PPPoE enables the use of time and volume tariffs because it creates a virtual dial-in that the user must first perform and that can be monitored by the provider.

Enter the correct username and password

  • The username and password are essential components of the DSL connection. Without you, no internet connection is possible. However, the data does not have to be re-entered every time.
  • The authentication data is stored in the DSL modem or DSL router with a built-in model and then used automatically. This process is only necessary once.
  • As a rule, the user name for PPPoE access consists of a combination of various personal data at the provider. For example, the user name can be made up of the customer number, the order number and the last name.
  • The exact composition differs from provider to provider. In case of doubt, this composition was communicated to you with the execution of the DSL order or you can find out about it afterwards via the help hotline of your provider. Also check the website of your provider if you have another Internet connection option. The procedure for different devices is also often described here.
