23 Smart Ways to Make Money from Your Blog

TL; DR

This post introduces some of the better ideas you can implement today to start monetizing your blog and making money on your website.

For me, the beauty of doing business online is that with an internet connection (1) you can make a living anywhere and your income (2) has no upper limit.

Blogger Pardeep Goyal made 60,000+ rupees in the first three months. Lindsay and Bjork of Pinch of Yum made just over $ 25,000 in April 2015. That same month, Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income made $ 86,371.99, Harte Agrawal of Shout Me Loud made $ 11,796, and Matthew Woodward made $ 26,283.41.

Even so, many people struggle to make money online and make a living from it.

So Jerry has put together an excellent guide on how to make money blogging, including how to start a blog, choose a niche, and how to access it.

In addition to Jerry's guide, this article will tell you about 23 monetize this traffic. As important as it is to diversify your investments, it is also important to diversify your earnings.

So when streams of income go south, you have others to fall back on.

And who couldn't use a little (or LOT) more money?

Let's begin:

1. Write an ebook

Selling an e-book is a classic blog monetization technique.

Ebooks offer a lot of advantages:

  • To create them, all you need is the knowledge you already have
  • Paid eBooks build your authority as an expert
  • You can sell them on multiple platforms (like Amazon and Pay)
  • They can become great sources of residual income
  • You can effectively complement your sales funnel as an offer with a lower value

Many experts have made a name for themselves with an e-book. Remit Sethi, founder of I'll Teach You To Be Rich and a leading expert in online business, sells his first ebook for $ 4.95.

It was titled "Ramits 2007 Guide to Kicking Ass".

This ebook resulted in a New York Times bestseller and 14 different premium products that made him a very wealthy person - all sold entirely online and mostly through his blog.

This is how I proceed when writing e-books:

  1. Choose a theme. Write about something that your audience wants to learn, but that cannot be conveyed in a single blog post. Many are willing to pay for this information from a single source.
  2. Create an outline. This will help organize your ideas as you write.
  3. Block time to write every day. Don't be the person who starts an e-book and never finishes it. Block for an hour, two hours, 15 minutes every day - no matter how long. Just write it.
  4. Translate it into a nice looking e-book template. Here are a few from HubSpot.
  5. Design the cover (I use canva) or Pay someone for it (Fiverr).
  6. Photoshop your cover onto a 3D eBook image. Pat Flynn put together a great video on how to do it.

You are done! Now promote it to your heart's content.

2. Create a course

The next logical step for most bloggers is to create a course.

While you probably have a ton of free value added on your blog, a course can take your income to a whole new level.

Don't you think people will pay for this knowledge? Think again

Here are 5 reasons people would buy your course:

  1. You want the results your blog teaches, but faster.
  2. They want bonus information that you don't post on the blog.
  3. You want to be hand held through the process.
  4. They want more access to either email, phone calls or exclusive webinars.
  5. They trust you enough (by the free value you post on your blog) to buy your course, knowing they'll likely get their money's worth.

Here's a quick guide to creating courses:

Make sure you are the informationThe composition of packaging is above your blog content.This is the ultimate reason they buy a course from you. They're getting even more value than they can get from your blog.

Plan logical steps to achieve your goals.These are usually divided into "modules". Each module provides a brief introduction, key information, and a way to help your students take action.

To get them to act, create downloadable action sheets that describe exactly what they need to do to complete this module.

Include videoIn most online courses, the instructor speaks in front of a camera. If you don't want this, record your voice and use slides to show the information.

Your students will receive the information in two ways: verbally and visually. This will help them retain the information, get better results from your course, and refer more people to it.

3. Promote partner products in your posts

If you are already discussing products and services and recommending them to your audience, you can make money off of the people you refer to.

It doesn't cost your readers anything and you earn a commission every time one of them buys the product.

Affiliate marketing can be a great source of income for little extra work. Check out these ideas for incorporating affiliate sales into your sales:

Idea # 1: Find opportunities in your current content

First, go through the articles you've already published and find any products or services that you've mentioned. Once you find them, just go to each website and look for an "Affiliate" page.

Then follow the instructions to become an affiliate. Once you are one, you will usually be given a unique tracking ID that is placed at the end of each URL.

When a visitor with your ID clicks on this url and buys the product, you make money.

Idea # 2: Find opportunities in the products / services you use

Make a list of all the products and services that you use. I use a lot of online software related to my business. This can be a great opportunity for affiliate income.

Visit each product's website and see if there is an affiliate site. If so, sign up for the program.

Since you don't have any content for this yet, you'll need to create one. I suggest the following:

  1. Make a note of how you use the product or service. Does it help you optimize your work? Does it help you with SEO? Does it help you reach out to influential bloggers?
  2. Create a blog post tutorial that tells your attendees how they can get the same results using this product or service.
  3. Associate with the product or service and add your unique tracking ID.
  4. Promote this post to your target audience, social media, and any online hubs filled with people who want the same results.

Idea # 3: Find opportunities in the product / services you want to use

Would you like to use a certain product but can't afford it? What if you could get your money back in a relatively short amount of time?

If the product has an affiliate program this is a real possibility.

First, make a list of the products / services you want to use. Then go to their websites and see if they have an affiliate program.

When they do, buy the product and sign up. Then use it, create a case study / guide and promote the post as before.

These posts can stay active for a long time and bring you residual income for the life of each item.

4. Promote affiliate products in an email autoresponder

Email is a powerful marketing tool. It's one of the few channels that people check out every dayother waiting ready to be sold in.

An email autoresponder is an automated series of emails sent to people when they subscribe to your email list.

Here are my two favorite services:

  2. MailChimp

Both allow you to set up an autoresponder.

Just like promoting affiliate products on your blog, promoting those products in an email autoresponder can generate passive income for you.

You can either promote them directly in the emails or create blog post tutorials and promote them. In any case, there is an opportunity to make money.

Here's what I suggest with your autoresponder:

  • Start your first few emails with useful content that doesn't sell anything. This will help you build trust with new subscribers.
  • In relationship emails, speak like asking your subscribers if there is anything you can help them with. This will also build trust and reduce logouts.
  • When promoting the product, focus on the results that it can produce, not the product itself. If you have had results with it, make sure you explain them in detail. This will do the selling for you.

5. Sell email promotions

If you have an extensive email list, you can access this data whenever you want. It is also completely under your control.

For a fee, you can offer to add other people's content to your email list. This requires little extra effort on your part and you can filter the content you are promoting to make sure it is top notch.

Let your subscribers know that you may be promoting other people's posts on their behalf. Maintain a policy of transparency.

If you choose to proceed with this one, create a page on your blog that explains the service, cost, and expected traffic.

People who visit your blog will know this is an option when they need fast traffic.

6. Start an online coaching service

Coaching of any kind can be extremely lucrative.

Jon Morrow, one of the best bloggers in the world, says that even a novice blogger can charge $ 90 / hour for a phone coaching service. And he's helped thousands of bloggers!

Telephone coaching offers a number of advantages:

  • You can develop a strong bond with your students. This can last a lifetime and attract constant new business for you.
  • It helps you build a reputation as an authority.
  • You begin to understand your audience's deepest and deepest needs and frustrations. This information is used to market gold for other products that you create and sell.

Instead of taking the actions you prescribed, take those actions for them.

This doesn't work in some industries, such as personal training. But it can perfectly work in online marketing, web design, and any other niche that doesn't care who's doing the work.

Since you do the job, you can charge a lot more for service done for you than you would for over-the-phone coaching. You will most likely also work with them over a longer period of time, so monthly retention periods (payments) are common.

Done-for-you services can range from $ 100 / month to over $ 10,000 / month. It depends on how valuable your service is and how much authority you have in the room. And also how big your customer's budget is.

Needless to say, this can grow your earnings quickly and keep them sustainable.

8. Install a members area

Membership areas can be a great source of passive income.

All you need to do is lock premium content behind a membership limit and you're ready. Then you decide whether you want to pay a one-time fee or a monthly recurring fee.

A private forum is similar to a members area.

As a rule, a forum is less valuable than a members' area because it is mainly based on user-generated content. Most member areas also contain forums.

Typically, you need to charge less to run a paid forum, but you also do less maintenance than a members' area.

Just do a Google search for companies in your niche and see if they have a paid survey affiliate program.

If you have a blog, especially a WordPress blog, you can install an ecommerce store right on your existing website.

These stores can either sell your own products where you get full sales, or they can be made up of related products (or both).

12. Create and sell your own physical product

Most bloggers don't consider creating and selling their own physical product, but it's an option.

Have you always wanted to be an inventor? Here is your chance.

The power is in the audience you own. When you have an audience to hear you can sell almost anything because they rely on your judgment and expertise.

Let's say you're a food blogger and you've invented a new kitchen object that allows you to cut apples in two steps. You can design, manufacture, and patent it. Then you can use your existing audience to drive sales, prove demand for the product, and get it in stores.

It's not a conventional route, but it might be the right one for you.

13. Win partners for your products / services

Do you have an ebook? A course? A coaching service?

Well, you can passively gain new business by setting up your own affiliate program and getting other people to promote your product.

Once you have your own product, this is an effective way to get sales going and keeping them going. Here's one way to do this:

First, upload your product to Clickbank or Udemy (if it's a course). Then do a Google search for these search terms:

  • "Your Niche" + "Blog"
  • "Your Niche" + "Website"

Find as many websites as you can and reach out to them all to see if they would like to receive a commission on your product.

Then go to Alltop.com, search for your niche, and again find as many websites as you can.

Then you reach them as before.

You can even make a marketing kit that you can give to anyone. This kit shows them the best way to promote your product and make money. It will be a win-win situation for both of you.

14. Start an in-person coaching service

Just like online coaching, in-person coaching can earn you a solid hourly rate.

This type of coaching can also be more effective for your students as you work together in a more intimate setting. When your students get results from your coaching, they will disseminate your services and help you grow your business for you.

Simply offer the service on your website, make it known to your target audience and promote it in your region. Your blog will serve as evidence of your expertise.

15. Set up sales funnel and paid traffic

Once you have a product or service installed, all you have to do is increase sales Make sure your traffic is converted other Increase the traffic.

One of the best ways to convert traffic is through a sales funnel. A sales funnel guides potential buyers through the buying process and ends with the final sale.

Each phase is a logical step towards your paid product or service.

  1. Offer a lead magnet
  2. Offer a tripwire
  3. Offer your core product
  4. Offer a profit maximizer

The sales funnel for most bloggers is an email autoresponder.

Lead magnet

A.lead magnetAttracts visitors to choose your sales funnel.

It's a free resource that you give in exchange for a prospect's email address and permission to contact them.

Some of the best lead magnets are:

  • Free e-books
  • Webinars
  • Checklists
  • Memory cards
  • Free mini courses

They'll then automatically deliver the free resource after someone decides on your list, usually in the welcome email.

Tripwire

After the lead magnet, offer oneTripwire

A tripwire is a cheap offer that is almost a breeze. This product can be extremely cheap ($ 1- $ 3). The goal is to turn your subscribers into potential customers Buyers.

This will change the basic relationship between the two of you and will get your readers used to seeing you as a retailer.

Core product

After the tripwire, sell yoursCore product. This is the product that most people have - usually an e-book, course, coaching service, service done for you, etc.

Otherwise, the best way to test your funnel is to send paid traffic. My favorite source is Facebook ads because they are easy to get you started with.

16. Sell advertising space

Selling ad space is a classic way to monetize almost any type of website.

Have you been on major news sites like the New York Times or Business Week lately? They're packed with ads and they get a ton of sales.

Some people find ads, especially on blogs, to be sticky. You see it as spam.

Regardless of whether this is the general mood or not, here are some things to try:

  1. Sales of your other products / services decrease
  2. Your conversion rates go down

If your earnings don't go down and your conversion rates stay the same, you've just increased revenue without affecting your other key metrics. Booyah!

Typically, you can choose the ads that appear on your website. You can choose the ones that actually provide value to your audience.

You can sell the ad space in many ways, but two of the easiest of them are Google AdSense and the Simple Ads Manager plugin for WordPress.

17. Offer a freelance writing service

This is a service bloggers can offer in almost any niche.

Your blog content is showing people 4 things:

  1. You understand online publishing
  2. You are good at writing
  3. They are used to following a writing process
  4. You have knowledge in your field

These are qualities that every freelance writer needs. Your blog content will automatically tell potential customers that you have these traits.

Companies crave content. It's almost a necessity in the online world, but companies always complain that they can't find good writers to stick with it.

There is a need and you can fill it.

Just create a "Hire Me" page on your website, explain that you can write articles similar to those on your blog, name your price, and let people know how to contact you.

18. Host a paid webinar

Webinars are a great way to convey a large amount of information in less than an hour.

Most of them are given away for free, but if you have premium quality information available, you can invite people to listen to you (similar to a live paid seminar).

For example, ProBlogger Job Exchange compares bloggers with companies that want to hire someone to create content for them.

If you have authority in your field and can match job seekers with employers, you can set up a job board and make money every time an employer wants to post a job posting.

You can also bill job seekers for access to the board.

20. Sell a piece of software

This requires significant capital and / or technical expertise, but many of the top bloggers have gone on to sell their own software.

This software goes with your blog content, of course. It helps their readers get what they teach faster and more efficiently.

21. Accept donations

People appreciate the time and effort bloggers put into each article.

It's not easy to be a blogger, and readers can see that.

Many of them will be willing to donate to you, even if it is a small amount, to help you run the website and keep producing content.

You can create a simple Paypal donate button and add it to your blog by following this guide from Vishnu.

22. Offer speaking engagements

As your reach and authority grow, you will likely be asked to speak at events.

These events can take place near you or even around the world. People will pay you to be there and speak to their audience.

To make sure people know that you are open to speaking, create a page on your blog detailing how you will be contacted for speaking and what lectures you will be giving.

23. Facebook retargeting

All of these blog monetization tips are nothing without traffic and conversions.

Often times, the most converting data is the visitors who have already visited your website and are familiar with you. If you can market to them directly, get them back to your website, and convert them, you can increase your sales significantly.

One of the best ways to do this is throughFacebook retargeting ads. These ads are sent to a pool of people who have visited your website in the last 30-180 days.

These people know you and are ready to buy from you.

To set up a Facebook retargeting ad:

First, go to your Facebook ad manager, which is usually at www.facebook.com/ads/manager/. Then click on Tools -> Pixels:

You create a custom audience. You can target this group of people in your Facebook ads.

Click the "Create Custom Audience" button. This window will open:

ForWebsite traffic, put it on everyone who visits your website.

Change the range to 180 days. This will ensure that your custom audience is as large as possible. Then check Include Past Website Traffic.

Finally, name it whatever you want, enter a description if you want, and hit "Create Audience".

Then click Actions -> Show Pixel Code:

This will show the code (pixels) that you need to embed on your website. This code records all visitors who come to your website and then forwards this data to Facebook.

If you have a WordPress site, embedding is easy. First install the tracking code manager plugin.

After the installation, go to the plugin and click on "Add new tracking code". Then paste your code like this:

And choose these options:

Then click on "Save".

It can take a few days to fill your custom audience. If so, you can create ads targeted directly to those people.

When creating your ads, just change the "Audience" to the custom audience you created earlier:

You can now market your content, products, services - anything you want - to people who are more likely to buy than random visitors.

This is also one of the cheapest hits you can buy.

Increase your sales
