Google Stadia is a game streaming service that should eliminate the need to purchase a game console. You call up games directly from the cloud and play them on a notebook, tablet or smartphone, for example. If you have a premium subscription, you will also regularly receive free games - similar to PS Plus for the PS4.

With a subscription to Stadia Pro you get access to a selection of free games that is constantly growing. Of course, you can also buy games via the Stadia Store - including highlights such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Samurai Shodown. You can check out the titles on the following website.

Google wants to link the Stadia service particularly closely with the YouTube video platform. If you watch a streamer playing there, you should be able to start and try out the same game at the push of a button on YouTube thanks to Stadia.

Games stream in 4K and at 60 FPS

The gaming experience should convince with 4K resolution, 60 frames per second and High Dynamic Range (HDR). Stadia's graphics performance even surpasses that of consoles like the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Of course, the graphic quality and the fluency of the display depend on your internet connection. You should at least have an internet speed of 10 megabits per second to be able to enjoy games in 720p resolution at 60 frames per second.

For Full HD resolution with HDR and 5.1 surround sound, Google recommends 20 megabits per second and for 4K resolution at 60 frames per second a constant 35 megabits per second should be given.

Measure internet speed for the game service

Not sure how fast your internet is? You can check this directly on Google on this Stadia website. But we also offer you an internet speed test on Netzwelt.

Google account, hardware and compatible smartphones

In addition to a sufficiently fast internet connection, you also need a Google account and hardware that runs Google Chrome. This can be an old PC or Mac. With Stadia, you can play on your smartphone, but you cannot use a cellular connection. These Android devices are officially compatible:

  • Pixels 2, 2XL, 3, 3XL, 3a, 3a, XL, 4, 4XL
  • Samsung S8, S8 +, S8 Active, Note 8
  • Samsung S9, S9 +, Note 9

In the meantime, however, you should be able to use any Android smartphone that runs the Stadia app, Google announced. So it doesn't necessarily have to be one of the above models. Since the enhanced compatibility feature is still in development, it may not work perfectly.

Now you probably want to know how much the service costs. However, this bundle no longer offers you three-month access to Stadia Pro as it did when it was launched.

Controller for Google Stadia

You connect the specially developed Stadia controller (in the gallery above) to the Stadia via WiFi. Obviously, you don't have to "pair" the device with hardware again and again if you quickly switch between platforms when using Stadia.

You can use the controller, which costs 69 euros separately, to record gameplay and there is also a built-in button for the Google Assistant voice assistant. For example, you can use this function to ask for tutorials for a puzzle while the game is running.

You can use up to four Stadia controllers with one account, as long as the local multiplayer mode of the title allows it.

Compatible gamepads

If you want to use Stadia on TV, you also have to use the Stadia controller. If, on the other hand, you play in the Chrome browser or on Android smartphones, you have a larger selection. Also have a look at the following table.
