Backgammon requires 2 players
Backgammon structure and rules
After the backgammon line-up, the game board stands between the players. Each player has an inner square and an outer square on the backgammon board. There are two colors (dark / light) and the aim of the game is to roll out all of your own pieces on your side before your opponent does this with his pieces. The game Backgammon is related to Tavli or Tavla or Tabla and has the same basic setup or starting setup of the blots.
What technical terms should you know about backgammon?
The two fields are separated by the so-called bar. The single ones "sharpen"(Playing fields) are often also referred to with the English word"Point" designated. There are several stones, a single stone on a point is called "Blot“(Eyesore). He can namely be beaten by the opponent and on the bar be set.
- The pieces are brought into their home position as shown in the figure above.
- White's move direction is in the direction of the inner white field 19-24 (numbered from top right to bottom right).
- Black's move direction is towards the black inner field 6 -1.
Backgammon rules and goal of the game
After the tavla or backgammon lineup, the moves are determined by the number of dice rolled. Each player strives to place all of his 15 stones in his own field after rounding the board tips. also called Heimfeld, in order to then roll them out of the game. White from his own inner field with tips 19 - 24 out, black from his own inner field with tips 6 -1 out. The first player to do this wins. There are different methods and tactics to prevent the opponent from reaching the goal.
Tavli vs Backgammon Rules
The rules of a normal backgammon game are very different despite the same setup with tavli and tabla. There are 3 rounds at Tavli, which contain different rules: Portes, Plakato and Fevga. Portes is the round that has the most similarities with backgammon, with the following differences:
- There is no doubling cube (64 cube)
- There is no backgammon (3 points) in the count, but one point for a simple win and two points if the opponent still has all the stones on the field
- Instead of making the first move with the initial roll, which determines the starting player, Tavli rolls the dice again
Backgammon setup & game equipment
For the backgammon start and set up you need a game board, e.g. in a backgammon case, fifteen light and fifteen dark game pieces (blots), two pairs of dice and a doubling dice. The arrangement, setup, or the structure of backgammon is as follows in the basic setup / starting setup:
With the doubling cube / doubling cube the stake can be doubled during the backgammon game. The numbers on this dice show the possibility of increasing 2-fold to 64-fold. If you have two dice and no backgammon case, you can also print out a field and the game pieces and make the field yourself (DIY backgammon). Backgammon suitcases can also be ordered online at a very affordable price.
The doubling cube - how it works
The offer for doubling can be made by the player whose turn it is before rolling the dice. Here the stake is doubled - if you are playing for points you can do this until the maximum number of points is reached. As a rule, you should only use the doubling cube as a player if you are aware of your own chances at the time of the offer - for example if you assume that you will win the game. However, in order to maximize the chance that the opposing player will accept the offer, the distribution of chances in return must not be too extreme.
Reject the duplication offer
If the offer is rejected, the opponent immediately loses the game and pays the existing stake at the time of rejection. The game is over and a new game can begin. If you yourself are in the position to accept the double offer, you have to weigh up whether you can still win the game or how high the chances are of losing the game.
Double offer acceptance
If you accept the doubling, it is your turn next when it comes to doubling. If the offer is accepted, the doubling cube (starting with the two) is placed on the bar as a score indicator. A further doubling offer however, only the player who has accepted the above can do it. As a player, you should always be aware of this position of power, both as the player who initially plays the dice and as the player who accepts the offer. From the next move on, the player who has accepted the doubling cube can play it again, provided that the situation appears positive from his point of view.
How do you win at backgammon and how the game ended you can find out in the next section.
Score the dice
A stone may be rolled out if the number of points on one die is sufficient to move this stone over the edge of the field. You can use a part of a throw or the whole throw to move stones in the inner field instead of playing them.
If a throw is suitable to play a stone from a point that is not occupied, then this throw must be used to play a stone to draw from the highest occupied point. In any case, the player can choose which number he wants to draw first.
By playing the stones, individual stones can also stand without a block. If the opposing game still has stones that have been captured and have to be played back into the game, this is a potential risk. If you want to avoid this situation, you must first move your own blots inwards as far as possible in your own field, if this is possible.
Backgammon setup and setup
The backgammon structure and the setup or starting setup of the game board is relatively easy to explain:
- There are a total of 24 points, 12 white and 12 black points
- The 15 white and black stones are positioned on the points
- The positioning depends on the direction of pull and the target: two points with 5 stones, one point with 3 stones and one point with 2 stones
- As a rule of thumb you can remember: white outside, black inside and black inside, white outside - at the start there are 2 stones of your own color in the outer field 3 stones
If the blots or stones have been placed on the playing field, arranged and the players are ready to start the game, each player rolls one dice, the player with the higher number starts to play. If a double was rolled at the beginning, the dice are rolled again until a player has a higher number on a dice. The backgammon set up is now complete and the game can begin.

Backgammon game instructions, start and backgammon rules
The backgammon rules are very easy and quick to internalize. After the playing field has been set up, the beginning comes: The start of the game of backgammon is a little different than the other moves. To start backgammon you have to roll the first move. The two players each roll their own die once. The player with the higher number has the choice of color for the stones for the first game. He begins the game according to the rules by making the first throw with both dice. He must therefore use the two numbers that were rolled by the different dice. If both players roll the same number, the roll is repeated until there are different numbers.
According to the numbers on each die, he then moves one or two pieces over the tips of the board in the direction of his own inner field, White counterclockwise, black clockwise.
