What are legendary Pokémon?

In previous Pokémon games, legendary Pokémon are extremely rare Pokémon that are often woven into the background story. Some can only be caught in special events, others also in normal game. Each player can only own a legendary Pokémon once per saved game.

Legendary Pokémon in Pokémon GO are also very rare. They were introduced as the highlight of the Pokémon GO Fest 2017, the main celebration of the game's 1st birthday. Since then, there have been legendary raids that have a legendary Pokémon as the raid boss. Legendary raids are likely to be the only way to catch Legendary Pokémon in Pokémon GO.

How to catch legendary Pokémon in Pokémon GO?

So far, Legendary Pokémon cannot be found in the game as Wild Pokémon. Instead, it is only possible to catch Legendary Pokémon following legendary raid battles. Like current raid bosses, these then appear as Pokémon with normal WP values following a successful raid.

However, there is a catch: Legendary raid bosses are extremely difficult to catch - they very often escape from the premier ball. According to the data in the game master file, the base capture rate to catch a legendary Pokémon is included 2 percent. Exceptions are Arktos, Lavados and Zapdos, for which Niantic has the basic chance to catch 3 percent raised. You can read more about this in the news Pokémon GO: Catch chance for Arktos significantly increased.

This basic chance of catching can be increased with raspberries, throwing techniques and medals, but you should be prepared for the fact that it will take several raids to catch a legendary Pokémon.

What are the special features of legendary Pokémon?

Legendary Pokémon have extremely strong stats. They are therefore particularly suitable for fighting against powerful raid bosses and arena opponents. However, they cannot be placed as arena defenders. This is justified story-technically with the fact that the legendary Pokémon do not want to leave the trainer's side. The real reason is more likely to be the game balance and precautionary measures against cheaters.

Another special feature of legendary Pokémon is the distance that they have to travel as buddies to find a piece of candy. This is included here 20 km per candy and thus four times as high as the previously highest 5 km distance. Our guide Pokémon GO: Buddy list with all buddy KM distances provides more information on the topic.

Last but not least, legendary Pokémon also behave differently when they are exchanged. Like Shiny Pokémon, legendary Pokémon require a special swap, which is only possible once a day and causes high stardust costs.
