Pilates and Yoga: Different Origins
Compared to yoga, Pilates is a relatively new form of training that combines strength training and gymnastics. It was invented in 1883 by the bodybuilder and circus performer Joseph H. Pilates from Germany. The Pilates exercises are designed to strengthen the muscles and improve posture.
Yoga, on the other hand, is an originally spiritual teaching whose roots lie in India and can be traced back several thousand years. The spiritual goal is to bring body, soul and spirit into harmony. Modern yoga serves, among other things, to reduce stress, to strengthen the muscles holistically, as well as to train mobility.
Pilates as a holistic fitness program
Pilates exercises are mainly performed in a lying or sitting position and are relatively easy to learn. As a beginner, you will find it easy to get started and can easily adapt the fitness program to your own fitness. Because in contrast to yoga, the repetitions are decisive here, and can be increased gradually.
Nonetheless, Pilates also serves to switch off from everyday life and to relax mentally through physical exercise. Spirituality does not play a role here, however. As in yoga, a certain breathing technique is used, but there is a difference: While you breathe in through your nose in Pilates and exhale through your mouth again, in yoga you breathe exclusively through your nose.
Yoga: between modernity and tradition
In yoga, breathing exercises also play an even more important role than in Pilates. Breathing, like meditative exercises, is said to relax the mind. Yoga still combines traditional and spiritually inspired aspects with the modern idea of a trained and healthy body. In this way, the muscles should also be strengthened and posture improved.
In addition, unlike Pilates, yoga places great value on other aspects - including a sense of balance, endurance, deep relaxation and psychological well-being. The individual exercises are not based on as many repetitions as possible, but are instead held over a certain period of time.
Combine yoga and pilates
The differences between Pilates and yoga do not have to be faced with an "either / or decision". Rather, both training methods complement each other. Depending on the state of health, different and well-combined exercises from both types of training can form the optimal training program.
