What happens if more RAM is installed than the motherboard supports?


I have a free RAM slot and free space that fits on my computer. However, the problem is that my motherboard only supports 2GB and I installed 2GB. What would happen if I put the spare memory in the RAM slot?

The following things come to mind:

  • Nothing will happen
  • It will work, the computer will get faster
  • The computer slows down
  • explosion
  • Indefinite (any of the above)

Does anyone have any experience with it?

Update: Zealously incited by you, I collected the additional memory. Unfortunately, the guesswork of some has proven correct. The memory is reported at the upper limit and not the actually available one. So it's a shame! But thank you all for your suggestions, speculations, and stories.

As a reference, I am using a Dell Insprion 6000 with 2 GB of the latest drivers installed. I tried adding 512MB to no avail.

Simple answer: either it only shows the maximum supported memory or it doesn't work at all.

My gut feeling says two things:

If it works, you just won't see the additional memory, just the maximum capacity that the motherboard / chipset can support. If it doesn't work, it usually just beeps you with a memory error and you won't get a video response. It all depends on the motherboard depending on how it deals with memory corruption.

Someone on Yahoo replied that this is why it was interesting to get a blue screen:

In my experience, the computer will no longer boot if more than the maximum RAM memory specified by the manufacturer is used.

others claim:

Some won't POST, others will and just BSOD (Kernel Panic, etc.) with PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.

This means that the "max" memory is not always the actual max. Intel states that the GL960 chipset (as in my laptop) supports a maximum of 2 GB of RAM. 4 GB is a no-go, but 3 GB will work.







Your first stop is the motherboard manufacturer's website. Update the BIOS to the latest version. Then insert the additional memory and turn on the computer. If the memory is recognized, run MemTest86 +. no it won't explode! :)




This really depends on your motherboard. I've seen some cases where the system works normally but only recognizes the 2GB and I've seen some that won't start and throw an error.

I have to say that the hardware fails due to an "over-installation".


Was there already, did that. The BIOS complained about the memory and refused to start. I had to downgrade again. But this was an old Dell Pentium 133 and about 4 PCs in the past.

In general, this depends on the BIOS and hardware. It won't be able to handle the large modules, but if there are still smaller modules available, could the system decide to start only with the memory of the smaller modules. However, in general, the BIOS cannot use it, so there is no free memory available on your system.


Depends on the card and the BIOS. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-Fe770G that uses the GM945 chipset - Intel, Sony and Crucial say the max RAM size is 2GB DDR2 (1GB per SODIMM slot) but I am using Windows 7 x86 with 3 GB and both BIOS and Windows report (and presumably map) all 3072 MB. I'll try a second 2 GB DDR2 SODIMM and see if the BIOS and a 64-bit LiveCD operating system see 4096 MB.



I haven't tried this yet, but I think the motherboard will just ignore it completely.




I did it on an older computer and the computer booted fine. However, the BIOS / boot scrolling list only reported the maximum for the motherboard, so it has probably been ignored.

I don't know whether this is unsafe or not, but I just leave it to the maximum to be sure.


I tried installing 4GB on an HP 6720 that only supports up to 3GB and it happened that the BIOS detected the memory, but every type of memory check reported an error.

And trying to install an operating system (not even x64) was impossible. I got a memory related BSOD every time.

I found out later that some 6720s moderboards support 4GB, but not mine ... :(


Provided you install the correct type this motherboard accepts, any issues beyond 2GB will not be fixed and will be ignored.


I have 2.5 GB with a system limit of 2 GB and it works.


I have an HP Compaq dc7600 desktop with an OEM reported maximum capacity of 3GB. I installed 6 GB. The BIOS and Windows 7 Ultimate both recognize the extra RAM, but sysinfo shows:

Installed memory (RAM): 6.00 GB (3.25 GB usable).

Still, when I upgraded from 4 GB (which was already above the maximum) to 6 GB, the processor usage dropped across the board. I'm not an engineer, I can't explain it, but it's not my imagination.

One possibility that I've been thinking about is that while Windows doesn't provide the memory directly, it "sees" it and is therefore bolder when it comes to allocating RAM resources compared to virtual memory.




I am using an Emachines D620 notebook. It recently got very slow and the health report suggested relieving the load or upgrading the memory. I later took my PC to an expert who installed a 2GB memory module. The initial memory was 1 GB. In the instructions, the RAM limit that can be added has been set to 1 GB. My RAM is now 3GB and the rest of the unused memory is showing as available. Believe me, my PC is working fine and faster than ever.


I have an HP Pavilion 7935 that supports a maximum of 512MB of RAM. I built in 1 gig. It is currently used that way. It boots and runs fine (Bios shows 992 Mb)


The motherboard just ignores it. My computer is an HP Pavillion A1600N with a maximum of 4GB and I have two 2GB slots and two more 500MB slots and the computer can only read 4GB
