Apple coined the phrase: "There is an app for". And it's true, many of us now rely more than ever on our smartphones and apps. There are apps for music, dating, sports, health, transportation, learning new languages, and even tuning a guitar. But what are the best apps for getting happier?

There are tons of happiness apps out there these days. How do you know which are the best? Below, I'll explain five of the best science-based happiness apps and highlight their strengths and weaknesses.

The best happiness apps are primarily free (at least for a trial period). Many also use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the basis for their concept. Of course, the functions of the apps cannot be compared to an hour-long talk therapy with a counselor. In CBT, however, apps can work to help change your thought patterns by changing your behavior patterns through repetition. This can be helpful, for example, when you are trying to break away from constant brooding.

Who uses happiness apps?

There are various reasons why self-care apps are a positive addition to your life and can help you on your quest for happiness. They are more common than you think and people already tend to use their smartphones (now an extension of their own personality) to learn more about their minds and to be more in tune with themselves.

According to Nature Around 29 percent of the “disease-specific mobile health apps” are geared towards mental health.
