Losing weight with the potato diet: does it really work?

Potatoes have a dehydrating effect. This is due, among other things, to the mineral potassium, which potatoes contain a lot, 415 mg per 100 g. Because water is flushed out of the body, the scales then also show less. However, this weight loss is a sham because you don't lose any fat at first, only water.

If you want to lose weight, you have to bring about the so-called calorie deficit. This means that you burn more calories than you get from food. Then the fat reserves are tapped and burned, i.e. you lose weight. The basal metabolic rate should not be undercut. More exercise or sport can provide you with great support.

A simple trick: Cut down on sugary drinks and foods that are high in sugar and try to take 10,000 steps a day. This simple method can make a huge difference.

Is the Potato Diet Unhealthy?

As the name suggests, the potato diet is a so-called mono diet. One restricts oneself to one main food that is consumed in relatively large quantities. However, this is not ideal. The reason: mono diets can lead to a nutritional deficiency. Therefore, such a diet is fundamentally not advisable.

In addition, mono-diets such as the potato diet harbor a great potential for frustration and the dreaded yo-yo effect occurs faster than you would like.

What's Better Than The Potato Diet?

Anyone who wants to eat potatoes every day can in principle do so. But the trappings are crucial. The focus here is really on variety and variety. Lots of vegetables, lean meat and steamed fish or legumes as a side dish should definitely not be missing.

To lose weight with potatoes, you should make sure that they are prepared with a low fat content. Instead of cream and butter, use milk for the mashed potatoes and avoid fried foods.

We generally recommend choosing a varied diet that contains all the nutrients. Potatoes should also not be missing from the menu, as they provide many healthy nutrients such as potassium. A balanced diet, as recommended by the German Nutrition Society, is considered healthy all round.
