Why do we need a url
What is a domain?
- STRATO explains the importance and advantages of having your own domain
The domain - your address on the Internet
Would you like to set up a web project and register your own domain for it, but don't know exactly what that means? Then this will be explained here briefly and without too much technical expertise.
A domain is initially nothing more than an Internet address such as B. "strato.de" or "mein-dunschname.com". The part in front of and the part after the point have their own names again, with the last component being the more important one at first. Advantages of your own domain are, for example:
So what is a domain? And what are top, second, and third level domains?
The component of the domain name BEHIND the point, in our examples “.de” and “.com”, is called a top level domain (TLD) and signals whether a website is mainly active in a certain country or a certain city (e.g. .de for Germany, .at for Austria, .berlin for Berlin etc.), whether it is commercially oriented (.com), whether it is more for information purposes (.info) etc. With the advent of the new top level domains (nTLDs) you can Using the domain ending (e.g. .shop), classify even more differentiated at a glance which subject areas a website will most likely cover.
Second level domain
The component BEFORE the point (in the example “strato” or “my desired name”) is called “Second Level Domain” and you can choose it yourself - if it has not yet been assigned to someone else. Depending on the orientation of your website, you can use your company name or, for example, "Our-pictures-from-vacation". The second level domain is unique, so it only exists once on the internet in combination with a certain top level domain: If "meinwunschname.de" is already registered on someone else, you can try to use alternatives such as "meinwunschname.com", Avoid “meinwunschname.berlin” or something similar. You can find out whether your desired name is still available at STRATO with the domain checker. Here you are also offered alternatives - not least from the multitude of nTLDs.
Top level domain
The top level domain is initially more important because the computer reads an Internet address from back to front: to which country / city does the address refer, what purpose does it serve? Only then is it important what the specific domain name is actually called. This is similar to sorting letters: Here, the sorting is first roughly based on country / city and only then according to the street name and, if applicable, the house number.
What is a subdomain? And what can I do with it?
The subdomain (also called third level) is the part of a domain that - separated by a point - is in front of the actual domain name (second level domain), for example "login.domainname.de", "blog.domainname.de "or" gallerie.domainname.de ". As a website operator, you have the option of clearly separating independent areas of a website from one another. Nevertheless, it is immediately apparent that each area belongs to a main project.
With subdomains, for example, not only different projects, but also locations, application areas and languages can be displayed in separate subdomains, whereby individual subdomains have to be managed independently. This ensures a clear structure for your website.
Another way to structure your website is to create subdirectories. Here, individual areas are separate, but always pay into your domain. This is good to know if you are into search engine optimization for your website.
Subdomain: ideal for test tasks
There are many ways to use subdomains: Setting up a test environment is one. New ideas can be tried out on the subdomain without disrupting operations on the main website. Subdomains are also ideal if, for example, major changes are planned to a website. Then it can make sense to create a copy of the page under a subdomain such as "test.mein-shop.de" and to test the planned changes here first.
Use subdomains as quick access URLs
Subdomains can also simply be used as a practical “short URL” for landing pages or certain sub-pages. For example, long links for selected promotions or certain products on your website or shop can be shortened in order to print them on promotional materials. The actual URL could be as follows: "mein-shop.de/produkte/teekannen/haben-teekanne/sonderangebote/". It's not particularly attractive or easy to remember, however, especially if your customers have to type in the URL first. Here, subdomains can be used specifically as forwarding. You simply link a subdomain such as "aktion.mein-shop.de" to the actual URL in order to get a shorter one that can also be printed on flyers and is much easier to type.
A positive side effect: If it is a competition, for example, the subdomain can simply be redirected to your main page or deleted completely after it has expired. By the way: You can of course also comfortably certify and secure subdomains using wildcard SSL.
What is the use of having your own domain?
Now that you know what a domain is and what to do with subdomains, you can use them successfully for yourself. If you set up a homepage or a web shop with STRATO, first define an individual Internet address. Ideally, your visitors or customers will recognize what your website contains from the domain name. In the business area, having your own domain for your homepage is evidence of professionalism and trustworthiness.
The name of your domain will appear in your email address too, and not just when you use your website for business communication. Overall, a mail address that matches your own domain looks more serious than the name of an external mail provider. For example, you can send e-mails with the sender [email protected] instead of [email protected]. Design your homepage professionally with your own domain from STRATO in next to no time and benefit from other advantages, such as suitable e-mail addresses including out-of-office notice, MX record and simple administration of the addresses.
